System is Starting up...SLOW :) 4

Gabe

I have a computer that is just slow when it displays the system is
starting up screen. The computer is a slower computer P4 1.6 w/128mb of
ram running windows XP home SP1 (haven't wanted to put sp2 on yet with
this problem) with 22 processes running. But even still I can't help
but notice that not all computers will lag like this during the start
up screen. Can someone explain to me what windows is doing during this
time so that maybe I can free up some more stuff. the computer did have
alot of spyware on the system pre this problem, although I did clean it
all out using AVG 7.0 for trojans, adaware fully updated, spybot fully
updated, spysweeper, and giant, followed by manually going through the
registry and taking out BHO's and run items. also scanned a second time
using norton 2002 with latest virus defs. Computer is also running
norton on start up and that it

here's a hijack this log to get an idea of what's on the computer.

What's Windows doing at Startup ? It's loading programs
into RAM. 128Mb of RAM is not enough for Windows XP - you
need at least 256Mb, 512Mb is better. That is probably
your biggest problem. At Startup, when Windows runs out of
RAM (and it does if you only have 128Mb), it swaps
programs out to disk. That's why it churns and churns and
churns . . .

Use MSCONFIG from the Start button, go to the advanced tab
and prevent auto-startup for ALL programs except your anti-
virus and anti-spyware. System should run much better but
you MUST add RAM.

After disabling items in MSCONFIG (and re-booting), go
back and add them back one-at-a-time (and re-booting).
This will help you discover which programs are hogging
resources. Most programs that run at startup have an item
within the program to turn on/off startup at boot time.
Use this method for a permanent fix for programs that do
not need to run at Startup - like QuickTime, RealPlayer,
Creative News Update, etc. MSCONFIG is used for testing
purposes primarily.

Good Luck !

That's because the other computers have enough RAM for Windows
XP. Your 128MB is not enough.

Most people running a typical range of business applications find
that somewhere around 256-384MB works well, others need 512MB.
Some people, particularly those doing things like editing large
photographic images, can see a performance boost by adding even
more--sometimes much more.

Added a Crucial 512mb 2700 running at 2100 and system is still doing
the same thing. performance if faster but same results on windows is
starting up screen. Any guesses as to what the registry may be
processing??? I know this is a software problem but I just can't
pinpoint it. I don't think a soft install will work because I have seen
this before in the past and remember I could not figure out what it was
then, now I have alittle more time and want to find the solution.

As suggested, do clean-boot troubleshooting:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=310353

Also look in Event Viewer for clues. Perhaps something is failing and
then timing out.
Start>Run eventvwr.msc [enter]
