My computer starts 'clean up' then hangs. Does it do any
good to reload Windows? If you do reload Windows, does
this put the program back to the original installation
state, or will it just reload any corrupt files?

This is a known issue in XP. It hangs at the "compress old
files" setting. Go to www.kellys-korner-xp.com and look
for the fix. I forget where it is but do a search
for "Cleanup hangs at compress old files" and you will
find it. Have fun.

Hello,

Let's not be hasty! You don't need to reinstall Win XP,
because there is probably a minor problem that caused
clean up to hang. There might be some software or
hardware conflicts. Did you install a new piece of
software or hardware in the past month? Were you invaded
by a virus or worm? If you could give us a little more
information we can probably help you.

Clean up? what clean up?

Any cleanups you run should be run inside of Safe mode.
If you'd like to reload windows, as long as you reformat
and repartition your disk it will put everything back to
scratch. If you have recovery disk from manufactorer
(like Dell, HP, etc) it will reload drivers, software,
etc. If only a microsoft licensed copy from store it
will reload only the OS no programs.

Good luck!
