Hey,

Is there anyway to clean the registry of old files and
old programs that you have used in the past that have
been uninstalled?

It is not necessary to use any type of registry cleaner with XP.
However, if you really wish to use one,
try the Windows XP approved System Mechanic (www.iolo.com).

To 'clean' the registry you can use the Windows registry editor. But there's
something you should know first: The registry does not contain files or
programs.

No, but it contains the 'names' of some programs that have been deleted via
add/remove. AND, these can be removed from the add/remove list by cruising to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACH_Software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\uninstall. Highlite
the unwanted name and delete.
