Clean Install

Does the full version of Premium and ulimate allow you to do a clean
install? Aslo can the upgrade versions of ulimate and premium vista allow
you to do a clean install instead of me getting the full version I can get
the upgrade one instead. Also does the premium one have restore on the OS I
know ulimate does but what about premium edition. Also can some one tell me
if the poker game from ulimate extras is worth getting ulimate or just going
to premium.

All editions of Vista by default do a clean install, although the option of
upgrading is available, it only retains your personal files, applications
and settings. You can do a clean install with upgrade media:

How do I do a clean install with the Windows Vista Upgrade media?
1. Boot with the Windows Vista Upgrade DVD.
2. Click "Install Now".
3. Do not enter a Product Key when prompted.
4. When prompted, select the Vista product edition that you do have.
5. Install Vista normally.
6. Once the install is complete, restart the DVD-based Setup from within
Windows Vista. Perform an in-place upgrade.
7. Enter your Product Key when prompted.

Yes, system restore is included in Home Premium and Basic. As for the Poker
Game, I got it through the Ultimate Extras Service and played it only one
time (not well either). Beyond the game, Vista Ultimate includes
functionality from both the Home Premium and Business edition.

so if I want to do a clean install and a whole total wipe of my hard drive
yes a format. My options are if i get a upgrade version to do the steps in
the previous reply to this group. I am guessing you can not do a total hard
drive format and clean install on the regular full versions of ulimate and
premium edition. Just trying to make sense before I buy whatever edition I
buy tomorrow. But taking it if I read the emaisl I cna doa total reformat
anda clean install if I get the ulimate upgrade version or home premium
version over the xp edition I have after I downgrade back from the vista
beta that I still have. Sorry if this is confusing all I know is microsoft
made it harder for people to reformat there drives and clean off there hard
drives.

You can do a clean install with Full version by booting from the DVD. As
noted in my previous reply, just follow the steps to do a clean install with
the Upgrade DVD.

Sorry, but your suggested workaround for a clean install
using upgrade media no longer works. The product activation
servers have been reset to reject an upgrade product key
if no qualifying previous Windows 2000 or XP license
is installed.

Only a "Full Version" of Windows Vista can be used for
a true clean install.

And... neither version of Home can act as a Remote Desktop host, i.e., you
can RD into Business or Ultimate (or Enterprise) from Home, but you cannot
RD into a PC running Home Basic or Premium. Of course there are free
alternatives, like VNC.

great just great thanks carey you just made my life very hard now lol. Okay
so I guess it the full version of premium or ulimate. The only reason I would
get ulimate is for the poker game and the extras edition guessing extra is
like microsoft plus edition. well whats better guys premium or ulimate and
why I dotn care for remote viewing and dotn care for the other crap ulimate
has that premium doesnt except the poker game and the restore and the higher
secruity bit stuff but will be getting norton so that takes care of that but
the poker game does anyone have it and is it worth the full version of
ulimate? Also does there seem to be more problems with ulimate or premium or
are they the same?

Neither edition Ultimate or Home Premium cause any problems, well based on
my experiences and my Sister in laws experiences with Home Basic. It kinda
seems weird just buy Ultimate for a Poker game, its really not that special.

I did a small little overview of it with Bitlocker on my blog:

If the game is not that important, go for Home Premium, if you are depending
on Ultimate Extras to bring more features to Vista beyond whats in the box,
then Ultimate would be a good choice, especially if you work as a dual mode
user who needs both business and consumer functionality it provides. I like
Dreamscene which is exclusive to Ultimate by the way.

I am guessing you can not do a total hard drive format and clean install
on the regular full versions of ulimate and premium edition.

Well, you're guessing wrong. You can.

You can also do the above with a retail upgrade version.

You can also do the above with an OEM version.

You can ALWAYS do a clean install (including formatting the disk) no matter
what version you load.

It's just that, on the "upgrade priced" versions, you have to have an
existing version of XP (or previous) running when you begin the
installation, to qaulify for the price.

MS has no such terminology as "True Clean Install". Is that your description
of something? Not sure what makes it "true".

Every version of Vista can be used for a "clean install", according to MS.
Using MS's definition, of course.

True, but it takes twice as long if you have an upgrade version.

This sounds like a very big mistake on the part of Microsoft. I am sure
that someone will have to reinstall their operating system sooner or
later after making the upgrade. Now, they will have to remember to keep
their old copy of XP and install that first. But what if their old copy
of XP was on a recovery partition, which no longer exists?
