CLEAN INSTALL ON NEW BUILD PC

K

Keith

Please see the details below. I had an original OEM CD
purchased with the kit of parts for the PC and have since
obtained a further CD that I know works as it's been
installed on a friend's PC. I still can't get the damn OS
to load and continue to get the same message, i.e.

Error: SXS.DLL:Syntax error in manifest or policy
file "D:\I386\asms\10100\MSFT\WINDOWS\GDIPLUS\GDIPLUS.MAN"
on line 4

Error: Installation failed:D:\I386\asms. Error message: A
component's file does not match the verification
information present in the component manifest.

etc, etc.

I've taken the system apart and re-built it with minimum
componenents and still no luck. Could there be something
else at fault other than the CD?

Your particular error message is indicative of a bad
CD burn and /or a corrupt file image. To correct
the problem, use an authentic, original, Microsoft Windows
XP installation CD. If that's what you have, then get a
replacement.

| Help, I'm having a major headache trying to install XP
| home on my new PC. Boot from CD works fine, I boot from
| the hard drive to continue set-up and the insert the CD
| and everything's fine for a few minutes. I usually get
to
| enter the region and user ID and sometimes also the
| product key then get the following error message:
|
| Error: SXS.DLL:Syntax error in manifest or policy
| file "D:\I386\asms\10100
\MSFT\WINDOWS\GDIPLUS\GDIPLUS.MAN"
| on line 4
|
| Error: Installation failed:D:\I386\asms. Error message:
A
| component's file does not match the verification
| information present in the component manifest.
|
| etc, etc.
|
| Does this mean my CD is corrupted or is there a more
| sinister meaning to the message?
|
| All help gratefully received.

You are lucky: in my case it stopped with VCRT.MAN (in
folder \asms\6000\).
I have already seen several time the story
regarding "original" CDs. Same as you: mine is an original
one comming from MSDN Universal.
If I can't get a solution via this Newsgroup, I will open
a case at MS support. After all, it is included in the
price.
Good Luck !

Thanks for the tip Shenan. I've tried two different
drives which I know to be OK as I took them out of my old
PC. I do though have a new HD - could that be at fault?

Yes, I have tried with another CD Drive. I have also
installed a different drive. No way. I even tried to
disconnect the second hard disk and CD-ROM drive (thus,
having one hard disk and one CD-ROM drive only). At the
same time, I removed the sound card and Pinnacle DV 500
(video editing), keeping only the graphic card and the
network card.
No chance.
Grrrr...

The worse: the CD-ROM perfectly works on another machine !!

Try playing with the BIOS settings for the CDROM drive.
Instead of going with the autodetected settings, try
manually setting DMA.

Should not be. Hmm.. I had this error on another machine just recently. It
did turn out to be the settings on the hard drive in the BIOS - but I cannot
recall exactly what I did to fix it.
