I want to perform a clean install of windows xp due to various problems I'm
having

When booting from the win xp cd it goes to the setup screen, loads the files
and then displays a message stating that "there are no hard drives on my
computer"!!

I have a new dell 9100 system with a 500gb hard drive 2 gb ram 3.4mhz

it came preinstalled with all sorts of stuff I don't want so I just want to
do a clean install and put my own programs on.

I have done this many times with my old pc with no problems at all

any advice would be appreciated

That would mean that XP's installer cannot detect the Mass Storage
controller. If the PC has a SATA (Serial ATA) disk drive, you may
need to supply the drivers to XP. Usually, this is done with a floppy
disk which may be a problem if your new PC doesn't have one. If
that's the case, then you may have to create a modified install CD &
use a OEM method to include the necessary drivers.
