"clean" computer running slower than usual

Hello. I'm running Windows XP Home Edition.Yesterday I (stupidly) downloaded
something called "Cursor Mania." This included a new search bar called "My
Web Search." As soon as it was on my computer everything slowed down way too
much so I quickly got rid of it. I also got rid of everything else my
spyware/advare/virus detectors considered even remotely threatening. After
doing this I also did a disk cleanup and defragmented it. The computer is
still not working the same as before - it's like it's "working" more than
usual, which slows down everything else. You know how there's a light that
blinks and you can hear a noise inside from time to time, but usually more
noticeable when opening software? Well mine is doing that way more often than
usual and acting like it's struggling to open programs even when I'm not
using it or trying to open anything. Of course, this slows down everything
else, especially opening and closing programs. Any idea what's going on or
how to fix this? Thanks.
