"Choose User" screen has vanished - XP Home edition

Neither Microsoft nor Gateway support have an explanation or help for me. I
have 4 users set up on my XP Home system, but I can no longer access the
"choose user" screen, that has the names listed and a picture to click on to
go to that user's account. Instead I get a user name and password prompt.

Here is the description of the problem, that I sent to Gateway:

"When I boot to windows, I no longer reach the user selection screen, where
my user accounts are listed with the pictures
so I can select which user account I want to access. Instead, I get a user
name box with a space to put a user name and a space for a password.
I did not have any passwords associated with my user names, so all I have to
do is enter the name and click OK to gain access to the individual user
accounts.

I also get the same user/password box when I go to switch users, once I have
successfully logged into an account. When I select start-logoff-switch user,
I get the user/password box. If I change the user account name in the box, I
get a message of "this will log off the current user. Any unsaved data will
be lost", and have to either click OK or cancel. OK logs off the current
user, then the box comes back so I can enter a new user account name to
access another account. I cannot access the welcome screen anymore at all.
The only other program that seems affected is that I can no longer right
click a picture and select "set as background".

Also, when I go into the control panel to the user account area and try to
choose the selection of "change the way users log on or off", I get an error
message of "The specified Module could not be found", but it goes to the next
screen anyway. I click OK to remove the error message, and I am on the
screen labeled "select logon and logoff options". The two choices listed are
"Use the Welcome Screen" and "Use Fast User Switching". Neither box is
checked, so I select one or both of them and click "apply options", which
takes me back to the "pick a task" screen of the user accounts program. When
I go back into the "change the way users log on or off" screen, I once again
get the same error message of "The specified Module could not be found", and
the boxes I just
checked are no longer selected.

I have done system restore, to as far back as three weeks ago, which is far
beyond when the problem began, which was one week ago. It had no effect.
Any help would be appreciated."

I can be reached via email at (e-mail address removed) if anybody can help me,
or I will try to remember how I found this page and check back for any
answers if anybody has any. Thanks for your time and effort! Mike

Hi, Bert...I ran the program you suggested, but it didn't find anything wrong
with whatever it was checking. As far as any changes, I don't even know what
"Tweakui" is, so I don't think I changed anything in it...any other ideas?
:) Thanks for checking!

Ahh...for a minute there, I thought that would do it, but it didn't have any
effect. I changed the settings you indicated, applied them and exited out of
the utility. I tried to switch users and the same thing happened again. So
I did a restart, thinking that would help, but no luck. I'm beginning to
think this is going to be a "repair windows XP" problem...any other ideas
anybody? :(

Did you see the message "Default GINA in use" when you ran the program from Doug's site?

If yes, then try this:

Open Registry Editor and navigate to:

[HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
Set "LogonType" value to 1

[HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
Set "AllowMultipleTSSessions" to 1

NOTE: If policies are configured for disabling Welcome Screen / FUS, you need to relax them. Policy settings always take precedence over the UI settings. Try this:

[HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system]
* If "LogonType" value exists, delete it

[HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system]
* If "AllowMultipleTSSessions" value exists, delete it.

Yes, "Default GINA in use. DLL in use: MSGINA.DLL (standard)".

As for the rest of your instructions...I have no idea what the data strings
you entered mean. I think that's a bit beyond my know-how. I thought I knew
- I typed "regedit" in the run box, and a window opened, but that's about all

Did you see the message "Default GINA in use" when you ran the program from Doug's site?

If yes, then try this:

Open Registry Editor and navigate to:

[HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
Set "LogonType" value to 1

[HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
Set "AllowMultipleTSSessions" to 1

NOTE: If policies are configured for disabling Welcome Screen / FUS, you need to relax them. Policy settings always take precedence over the UI settings. Try this:

[HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system]
* If "LogonType" value exists, delete it

[HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\system]
* If "AllowMultipleTSSessions" value exists, delete it.

Ahh...for a minute there, I thought that would do it, but it didn't have any
effect. I changed the settings you indicated, applied them and exited out of
the utility. I tried to switch users and the same thing happened again. So
I did a restart, thinking that would help, but no luck. I'm beginning to
think this is going to be a "repair windows XP" problem...any other ideas
anybody? :(

Mike,

Meanwhile:

Open Services.msc from Start/Run
Double-click "Terminal Services" and set it to Automatic and Start the service
Double-click "Fast User Switching Compatibility" service and set it to Automatic. Start the service.

(*Note down the error messages if any, in either case)

Hi, Bert...I ran the program you suggested, but it didn't find anything wrong
with whatever it was checking. As far as any changes, I don't even know what
"Tweakui" is, so I don't think I changed anything in it...any other ideas?
:) Thanks for checking!

Hi

Run the script below, this may fix it.
Fix Windows XP Logon:

Have you made any changes to logon in Tweakui?

Neither Microsoft nor Gateway support have an explanation
or help for me. I have 4 users set up on my XP Home
system, but I can no longer access the "choose user"
screen, that has the names listed and a picture to click
on to go to that user's account. Instead I get a user
name and password prompt.

Here is the description of the problem, that I sent to
Gateway:

"When I boot to windows, I no longer reach the user
selection screen, where my user accounts are listed with
the pictures
so I can select which user account I want to access.
Instead, I get a user name box with a space to put a user
name and a space for a password.
I did not have any passwords associated with my user
names, so all I have to do is enter the name and click OK
to gain access to the individual user accounts.

I also get the same user/password box when I go to switch
users, once I have successfully logged into an account.
When I select start-logoff-switch user, I get the
user/password box. If I change the user account name in
the box, I get a message of "this will log off the
current user. Any unsaved data will be lost", and have
to either click OK or cancel. OK logs off the current
user, then the box comes back so I can enter a new user
account name to access another account. I cannot access
the welcome screen anymore at all. The only other program
that seems affected is that I can no longer right click a
picture and select "set as background".

Also, when I go into the control panel to the user
account area and try to choose the selection of "change
the way users log on or off", I get an error message of
"The specified Module could not be found", but it goes to
the next screen anyway. I click OK to remove the error
message, and I am on the screen labeled "select logon and
logoff options". The two choices listed are "Use the
Welcome Screen" and "Use Fast User Switching". Neither
box is checked, so I select one or both of them and click
"apply options", which takes me back to the "pick a task"
screen of the user accounts program. When I go back into
the "change the way users log on or off" screen, I once
again get the same error message of "The specified Module
could not be found", and the boxes I just
checked are no longer selected.

I have done system restore, to as far back as three weeks
ago, which is far beyond when the problem began, which
was one week ago. It had no effect. Any help would be
appreciated."

I can be reached via email at (e-mail address removed) if
anybody can help me, or I will try to remember how I
found this page and check back for any answers if anybody
has any. Thanks for your time and effort! Mike
