I have a problem with Xp home edition booting up.
when i boot up i get a black screen with two options come up asking windows
xp or system restore.
i recently downloaded the net.2 update then i had a problem with
pchnotify.exe.
i uninstalled the update then by mistake un installed the hot fix for Net 1.1.
i then down loaded the update for net 1.1.
but now i get asked everytime i boot up whether i want windoews xp home
edition or system restore.
i am running Hp pavillion AMD Athlon 64 Xp home editiom sp2.
Would be grateful for some help.
regards,
Chris.

thanks for the reply.
i have used these in the past only to have to completely format and load
everything again and I was hoping i would not have to do this a again!
soft version System restore has never worked. )programs never work properly
after)
i was hoping another solution was available like replacing the boot.ini file
maybe or something like that?

I don't know for sure what you have on your system.
Are you booting from hard drive or a cd rom?

What is make and model of computer?

Yes. I think it can be removed by editing boot.ini!

These 2 optins show up during a Normal bootup?

what is soft version system restore?

Hi sorry for the delay in replying.

I have a HP 4100 desktop pc running windows xp home with sp2 installed.
64 athlon 3200+ processor.
the 2nd option is Recovery Console.

i think the "soft Restore" is the recovery option. leaves your programs
installed unlike a full restore where the pc is restored to the factory
settings etc.
do you think it could be a registry entry? or a boot ini problem?
if it is a boot ini problem can i copy and rename the file to say
Bootini.old then delete the original bootini and restart? i think i did
something like this before.

Regards,
Chris.

You didn't have the dual boot option before?
win XP home
Recovery Console

I don't see how your issue with net passport would've created a new boot menu?

Please post the contents of your boot.ini file!!!!

Assumoing yuo are booting from "C" drive.
Start>Run>C:\boot.ini press enter. copy and paste here.

Hello again.

My drive is partitioned C: is normal and D: is the recovery partition.
It is the windows recovery console that is the second option.
no Normally it boots direct to win xp no options no black screen.
Here is the boot.ini file.

[boot loader]
timeout=3
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=Optin
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

hope this helps.
Regards,
Chris.

Go to Disk Management.
Start>Run>diskmgmt.msc

Describe what you see for "C" and "D" drive.

Border colors, size, desciption etc. of Disk(0) [and Disk(1) if you have one].
