CHM of Pricelessware, here

O

omega

If anyone might want it... I've a copy of the Pricelessware.org site
compiled into HTML Help format, for offline reference/reading.

I do most of my reading offline. The HH viewer has a few handy features
(for instance: advanced search, favorites), and can offer conveniences
over browsing a set of html pages with a different program.

I've also uploaded a small CHM that contains only pages on PL 2004 programs.
This one can be kept updated fairly easily (it's just a short succession
of steps), were I to learn that I am not the only one who has use for it.

Ah, what a relief! Exactly the same instant you posted that was when I was
typing a message to you in another thread, transmitting my insecurites, re
worrying how you felt about it. You were picking up across the airwaves. I
need a firewall for this, if you're reading my mind. Or, next thing, you're
going to also console me, with eg, "And no, it doesn't look like you've
gained weight this month." :)

Many thanks Karen, very nice! I also like to keep copies of some
material for offline access, such as the PL. Your chm is also useful
in that I it gives a good overview over the entire site.

Which tool(s) did you use? I have found
<http://abeetech.com/chmmakerfree/> quite useful my self for when I
simply want to combine/merge a few saved web pages (w/images if so)
into a single chm for easy offline reading.

All the best,
Bjorn Simonsen

I don't see why anyone should.. FWIW though: Files of this kind tend
to take on a life of their own, being passed around from one user/site
to another. It would probably be helpful then if the first page (PL
ENTER page) had some informative text added across, in red color
perhaps, something *like*:

"this is a offline copy of <url> - (c)alt.comp.freeware 1999-2004
please visit the actual live website <url> for updated
information and links"...

and

"This chm generated on..<date>"

and if you plan to keep the chm download updated and available in the
future then maybe also;

"for a more recent version of this HTML-HELP file check this site
<url> for updates"

Or, if not adding text to the PL ENTER page, then what if you added
such info on a separate page and make sure that page will be added and
listed first (above all the other) in the contents window of the chm.

On the other hand, maybe no such additional text is needed at all,
that these things are self evident - or should be?

All the best,

This is a good idea. Tomorrow, I'll change the Enter page, then upload
again. Unless some refinement develops, I think I'll use your text pretty
much verbatim. ( Probably won't go for red, though...that color makes me
think I'm at a bull fight in Spain. said:

I don't have plans to keep the large CHM regularly updated. I don't have
real plans to redo it for a while, maybe not until the PL 2005 season.

The other one, the little one - it'd be fast and simple to keep it updated.
(I recorded the handful of strings that were fed into HTTrack and BK
ReplacEm.) The issue would be a long-term URL for it. Not sure what would
be best choice there.

I like the first idea better, instead of cluttering into the contents
pane. One extra place: additional to the Enter page text, I could put
a page at the top of the Index panel. It could have any large amount
of text; and in that location, it would not be obtrusive. Not that I
have any idea what extra text to put there. The (c) status for instance,
that's already in place, throughout the Pricelessware pages that are
contained in the CHM.
On the other hand, maybe no such additional text is needed at all,
that these things are self evident - or should be?

Yeah, who knows?? Things that seem completely self-evident can still
receive the most peculiar misunderstandings.

Bon! I much appreciate your posting.

I'm not sure what to make of Port5's behavior today. (It also took me
about 30 attempts before they'd even let me get a full file uploaded).
I don't know if it's usual or not for them, to crumble into uselessness
like that. :(

I wonder if...if Susan could host the chm's on the PL site, but of
course only if available space - and only if the traffic there is not
already high enough to exceed any given quotas....Susan?

Thanks, Karen.
When I open the page (Netscape), I see a page of code, I expect that
with a chm file. I d/l the above. When I opened it (392,924) I see
"illegal operation" screen, so can't open it.

Mike - using Firefox it gives me the suggested option of opening using
windows help format - works fine here.

Could it be an association problem in your browser ?

Thanks, Alastair, I used Firebird and it worked fine. Sometimes my old
Netscape messes up, but I like it's bookmark system better than
Firebird. Haven't migrated to Firefox yet, waiting for dust to settle.

Sounds good to me - will have to check with Genna about site limitations
- I know nothing about them.

IMO including the date the files were compiled is a *good* idea. I
dislike the idea of including a CHM in Steven's text editor because when
Steven has the *editor* perfected there will be no need to download a
new copy -> the PL info will become outdated. . .

Just downloaded Karen's files . . .

I second that! Displays nicely in IE5.01.

Now if we can just get PL2004.iso up and running....

Just had a look at both files - very very nice! :)

A suggestion. Why not make a CHM of just PL2003 pages and another of
just PL2002 pages. ISTM that would make things simpler since those pages
won't change. When you're done - those CHMs are done permanently. You'd
only have to update this year's files. The combined file is nice but IMO
maybe more work than it's worth . . .

I suggest you check with Genna to make sure she has no objection to her
PL2002 pages being used in a CHM. I'm not sure if she's keeping up with
the newsgroup on a regular basis:

Genna Reeney <[email protected]>

Great job Karen! :)

IMHO, it would be a good idea to stick the catagories in the list, rather
than just on the page (won't make much difference but will make it look a
little nicer)

Now that I've seen it, thanks again. the chm file makes it visually very
easy to access.

BTW, with all those programs you've tried, might you have any ideas on
my post about a disk list, etc.?

In PL2004, the footer of each page has the source URL -- together with
the date (in short form). I was thinking of my personal needs when I
did that. That were I to reference something from a page, then at the
same time where I might also copy the URL, I'd be reminded of the date
of the information I was using.

I agree with you guys that more is needed. Where to put. I'm resistant
about putting a special entry in the contents panel. Two of the other
locations to consider... One is an extra button on the toolbar. I've
uploaded a revised PL2004.chm, with the extra button, to show what I
mean. The other place, as Bjorn suggested, it's on the CHM's open/home
page. In the revised PL2004, I put a footer in there.

1. Should one or both these locations be used?

2. I'd much appreciate refinement of the text I used: both its wording
and appearance. If you had an html string to hand me, then I can sub
it in.

Btw, about hyperlinking www.pricelessware.org in that text. I have
the assumption that there are only two choices. 1. browse from within
the HH viewer; or 2. open an iexplore.exe window. IOW, no means to
honor one's default browser. (This is why I didn't bother with doing
an href on it.)

That text would also be the place to say, "Download the latest update of
PL2004.chm at URL xxx." Naturally, no point in adding that as yet, until
a permanent URL hopefully emerges.

3. If the extra toolbar button is used. Then you could have extended text.
(I don't know containing what, though.) Another detail, if use the
toolbar button. If a preferred short name, other than "About," then
it can change of course.
