chkdsk (XP Pro): completes but PC doesn't start

After running chkdsk on bootup (locked disk), which runs
without problems, the followup screen comes up announcing
chkdsk completed successfully and the system will restart,
etc, but it hangs, does not start. Must manually reboot,
and choose "last known good configuration" to bootup.

What is happening/how do I correct?

Ary you doing this via "DOS", or using the check disk tool under
/properties/tools/Check for errors?

Under....Check for errors (Windows). Must run on startup
(locked disk).
