Chkdsk won't run

Hello,
I have gone thru all the options mentioned in this newsgroup about chkdsk
not running.
"chkdsk /f"
chkntfs /c c:
running chkdsk it in safe mode

all options lead me to running chkdsk on restart, but when restarted,
'chkdsk' never runs.

Below is the message I get when I try to run it. Hope someone can help me
find these errors.

C:\Windows\system32>chkdsk
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Volume label is SW_Preload.

Run it from the install disk. Go to the command prompt and use chkdsk /?
to find out the options. If I remember right, from the install cd the
options are /s and /p but I don't remember which is which. Obviously you
need to run the fix errors one. This version runs much longer than the
installed version, so be prepared.

I stand to be corrected...but I'm thinking
the following article for WinXP would still
be valid for Vista. Maybe the command
you need is: chkdsk volume:/r

(315265) How to Perform Disk Error Checking
in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315265
(check the two boxes..."Automatically fix file
system errors" and "Scan for and attempt
recovery of bad sectors") the utility will run
the next time you restart your computer.
(run error checking repeatedly until it finds
no errors)

Just to clairify...replace "volume" with the
drive letter...example: chkdsk C:/r

Would right clicking the Command Prompt option and selecting "Run as
Administrator" make a difference?

If you only have the one HD, then no need to specify the volume (C:)

Use the following at the command prompt

CHKDSK /R /F

Note space after K and space after R

This will take some hours to run on a large drive as it checks the whole
drive for errors

Sure is the safest way to go. I hope you have made sure you don't have a
hard drive that is failing. That is very often the reason for this problem
on Vista.
