can't run defrag because chkdsk is scheduled to run at next startup, but
never does. tried command line with chkdsk c: /r /f switches, no go. tried
chkntfs with /x C: and doesn't help.

XP came preinstalled on laptop so no XP CD so I can start in Recovery
Console.

how can i get this fixed? thanks.

Go to Kelly's site http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm
Click on "C" and scroll to Check Disk for some troubleshooting ideas.

One way to check the drive is to download a drive diagnostic utility from
the drive manufacturer's web site. That will create a bootable floppy or
CD. Boot from that and run the diagnostics.

Any retail or non branded OEM XP CD is good for booting into the recovery
console so borrow one from a friend.
