Chkdsk runs at every startup - files are corrupted

My computer runs Windows XP Pro. It has started running chkdsk at each
startup and I am experiencing numerous errors. I tried to re-install Windows
XP but I cannot complete the installation because of some C drive corruption.

Any ideas short of wiping the C drive and starting over?

The drive may have failed. Download and run the manufacturer's disk
diagnostic utilities.

Usually happens when the C drive is FAT32 instead of NTFS. Format your entire
hard disk in NTFS and reinstall Windows. You can also try partitioning the
Hard disk into two, and installing Windows in the partition that is towards
the end of the hard disk (usually D drive). But even then the new partition
should be NTFS for best performance. Avoid formatting in FAT32 first and
later converting to NTFS. Formatting in NTFS yields better performance than
converting.

try using system restore from an earlier date known to be a good start. If
this doesnt work then you will be required to format your drive and reinstall
windows. This means you will lose any and all updates and programs that you
installed. I had to do this only once with xp. This is because a game I
installed attached itself to some of my operating files and when I removed
the game program, it took those files with it, bummer. I had to make a call
to asia as I live in nz, to have my preinstalled windows program replaced.
Didn't cost anything, just a 800 number, and then used this information with
my disk to reinstall. Took me about a day to redo all the lost programs and
info updates.
I have a NTFS file system. Haven't had any problems with my pc since the
mishap.
