chkdsk /p didn't work

Hi,

I have a XP laptop that won't boot. I've run the recovery
console and tried chkdsk /p. However it returns the error
message 'The volume appears to contain one or more
unrecoverable problems'. I've tried fixboot and fixmbr
but it hasn't made a difference (apart from changing the
partition to fat16!!). When i do a 'dir' I get a list of
files and directories with control characters for names.
The windows system directory is not visible.
Is there anyway to recover from this or is the data and
windows installation totally shot?

TIA

I would personally stop running fix tools and shift to recovery mode. It
appears that the drive is failing fast, so best to use the remaining life to
get off what you can. I would suggest installing the disk as a secondary
drive in another system and use something like R-tools R-studio.

This can take a while to run, but it can work very well. Note that there
are several versions based on supported file systems - get the one you need.
The demos will show you what can be recovered, but are limited to files
sized 64K or so. IIRC, you can save the list the demo generates so if you
do decide that the full version is what you need, you don't need to rescan.

Once you have recovered what you can - make sure there is enough space on
the target drive for the complete contents of the disk being recovered -
mark the disk as bad and toss it or put it away.

Thanks for the post, I'll check out R-Tools.
