Hello,

A few years ago, I was using Windows 98 and ever when I wanted/needed to do
a Hard-Disk check and strated "Chkdsk.exe" I got a message that Scandisk.exe
was more powerful and was able to detect and fix more errors than
Chkdsk.exe.

But in Windows XP, "Scandisk.exe" seems to be left out of the Operating
System, and "chkdsk.exe" or chkntfs.exe" are supplied back with Win XP.

Can anybody elaborate?

Are there other software packadges on the market which can scan and repair a
harddisk on the market?

Noron Disk Doctor was a very good software, but if seems they never get
upgraded.

TIA

Hi,

Win98, and other Win9x systems, relied on scandisk, not chkdsk. NT systems
(of which XP is one) use chkdsk (and incidentally it is much more powerful
than scandisk), scandisk is not used at all. All hard disk checkers should
be used with caution, particularly with any autofixes which can munge
damaged or corrupted files even more than they currently are. Curiously
enough, scandisk was (and still is) particularly good at screwing up a
system by turning everything on the hard drive into a .chk file.

Thanks for the info Rick,
