XP Home...SP3+ eploded and died ...

....well almost died.

Brother tells me that system halted at the "Windows is closing down" sceen,
and after quite a few mminutes did not complete shutdown - so he held in the
Pwr button for 4 sec. (this was before he 'phoned me),
....so hd flagged dirty I suppose, ...

Next start up - chkdsk.exe kicked in and corrected lots of FAT errors
(perhaps?) - which was suspicious,

....anyhow - XP seems to sort have gone back to - as if it's just been
installed, and orig. XP green field, and reports -

Unable to locate component/s for ....
MSASCUI.exe (windows defender?)
NMIndexStoreSvr.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close...

....any idea what's gone bang ? ...any way to fix it without doing a repair
or re-install from scratch ?

TIA

regards, Richard

....sorry to be vague - ....as related to me by 'phone !

Many thanks, I'll have a look at that one. I think I'll give up the rare
post using Google Newsgroups. It seems to repeat like a machine gun !
I wouldn't use it at all but, for my ISP strangling NNTP midday to
midnight. I complained about that yesterday, to my ISP , and oddly, it's
now 9:40pm and I have NNTP !!!

Hey Richard,

It looks like you have serious problems with ISPs! Few days ago you were
complaining about BT and now you are complaining about Tiscali.

Are you sure your system is sound enough to go online? Have you got all the
latest patches which Pig-Bear is recommending even if you don't need them?

How is Milton Keynes these days? Those concrete cows have they survived
from vandals? I used to live in Shenley Lodge until I got fed up of boring
people there!

Incidentally, you can by pass your ISP to access these newsgroups
(msnews.microsoft.com). If you want instructions then post a separate
message.
