I am running XP with SP2. Was wondering if there is still a utility that
checks the condition of the hard drive?

The older windows called it scandisk, and I believe that XP had the
checkdisk, but I don'w find either on this sp2 version.

Open a Command Prompt (command or cmd) and execute CHKDSK /F
or
Double Click on "My Computer"
Right click on the drive you want to Check Disk
Choose; Properties --> Tools --> Check now
Check both boxes and click on "Start"

Chances are you will need a reboot and upon the Reboot, and before the WinXP GUI, a full
Check Disk will be performed.

I use it regularly. There is no scandisk. But, one can
enter chkdsk in the "run" box or all programs/accessories/
command prompt and enter checkdisk /f. But, it will tell
you that inasmuch as other programs are running you will
have to wait until restart and will ask you for a "yes" or
"no." if yes it will start at the next boot-up.

From Start - All Programs - Accessories - Command Prompt give
CHKDSK /F C:
(or other drive letter). For C: you will have to say Y to each of two
complaints so as to set it up to run at next boot
