CHKDSK on startup after bad shutdown?

B

Brandon Taylor

I remember in the days of Windows 9x that, after the computer was not shut
down properly, it would run ScanDisk when it was started next. Does anyone
out there know of any way to make Windows XP run CHKDSK under a similar
situation?

If you are running on an NTFS partition you don't have to worry about this
happening. If it needs to be done, it will be done. Because NTFS is a
journaling file system it is somewhat "self repairing". Hence, chkdsk does
not need to run near as much as it did under Win9x.

True, but if you're still concerned, open a command prompt and enter chkdsk
/f. It will tell you it can't run and ask if it can run on reboot. Answer
yes and then reboot.

Well open up either windows explorer window or the my computer window.
Right click on the hard-drive you wish to scan. From the menu left click on
properties. when the properties window has opened click on the tools tab and
then the "check now" button. Selected your desired options and click on
"start"

PLEASE READ:

if your using this tool to check the disk on the hardware level I would rely
on this at all. My personal thoughts. There are some killer free-ware probs
that do this job fantasticly like DFT (Disk Fitness Test). While your at you
may as well get Memtester to which is a great prog for testing RAM

These programs and many more can be found in UBD (ulitmate boot disk) image
which creates a fantastic bootable cd for hard ware checking

Hope this helps :)
