CHKDSK is hanging on stage 2 of 3 (verifying indexes)

I only noticed this the other day when I decided to do a disk check.

It won't complete the check and hangs on:-

CHKDSK is verifying indexes (stage 2 of 3)

and stays at 0 percent.

I've done all scans for any nasties and everything is clear so I am not sure
how to sort this out.

Please could you tell me what to do to fix this problem please?

Many thanks in advance

you can run chkdsk
at the file system prompt
via the recovery console
with your windows cd.

Are you running Kaspersky AV by any chance?

Db ~

I have all the disks for XP but I don't know how to do what you suggest.

Kayman ~

YES I do have Kapersky Internet Security (7.0.0.125).

I haven't had KIS that long, only a few months, as it was recommended by a
friend who said it was better than McAfee which I had previously, which
missed aa couple of viruses. I'm sure that after installing KIS I have done
a disk check since and it worked because I do try and run them periodically
and do a disk defrag too.

Do I need to do anything to the settings on KIS to ensure that the disk
check will work?

Any advice is gratefully received and I appreciate you taking the time out
to help.

Thank you db, I've printed this off and will read through it all tomorrow.

I'm hoping it is a Kapersky problem so will wait and see if that is so
before tinkering.

Thank you

Thank you Daave.

I don't know where to start now ... I got the top link just now by email
from KIS but I'm not sure I should be fiddling in things I don't really
understand.

I'm wondering now if putting KIS on my computer was a good thing as it seems
they expect you to be more technically minded than the average computer user,
and I'm not stupid but this is like double dutch to me.

I've read it all quickly and it says "in order to resolve such problems
Kaspersky Labs experts recommend launching the service CHKDSK with the /I
switch from the command line." but doesn't tell me in simple or ordered steps
how to achieve this.

Start | Run | chkdsk /i (there's a space before the slash)

Then restart your PC.

Thank you Daave very much, that explains it perfectly :)

I would like to thank db and kayman as well, as the help I've received here
has been brilliant and I haven't be made to feel silly for asking questions.

Thank you.
