CHKDSK HANGS-UP IN STAGE 4

I am running XP SP2 (current) on a standalone home use HP 9010
notebook. Chkdsk c: /f /r continues to run correctly but checking my
removable Omega 80MB HDD has become a problem.

Stage 1, 2 and 3 run OK but it hangs up when it reaches 98 or 99
percent complete on Stage 4 (Verifying File Data). The light on the
removable disk continues to flash but the percent complete does not
change. Results are the same in Safe Mode. I use Task Manager to
End the Task which is probably not a good idea so I decided to stop
and ask for help. Help! Time to Reformat?

Download a drive diagnostic utility from the drive manufacturer's web
site and run that.

Thanks Rock. I tried Omega site and I was unsuccessful. I found "Disk
Checkup" at Major Geeks but it only checks the internal drive. Thanks Again.

Bob how long did you let it run? Sorry I don't have any other
suggestions for you.

Rock, minimum of 10 minutes each time. I just formatted the drive and ran
chkdsk with an empty disk which verifies Free Space with no problem. When I
replaced some backups and copied some files to it chkdsk was back to it's 99
percent trick. Chkdsk on C: drive is ok so I guess it's the repair shop for
the Omega. Thanks again. BobW.

Yes it does sound like a problem with the drive.
