CHKDSK impossible ?

hallo
when running chkdsk after run at start-up you receive a msg :
cannot open volume for direct access
...........
..........
windows has finished checking the disk

and nothing happens !!!!!

the only way to run chkdsk is via console

who knows the problem and what is to do ?

Not sure... is it possible some other software on your
machine is accessing and locking the HD even before the
chkdsk has a chance to start?
Perhaps a virus or utility tool?

this is associated with installing Zone Alarm version 5 - recommendation
is to go back to ver 4, though a new build 043 is alleged to handle the
matter. Also Microsoft is working on it, having identified a problem
that ZA 5 brought to attention
 
The problem still exists with the 043 version on my computer. Installing the
recovery console is the work around!

If you have Symantec Anti Virus Corporate v9 it has a prob with chkdsk.
I had to dump it and reinstall v8.xxx
