the system detected a file system error and since it can't dismount the
volume while it's running, it is scheduled to run at the next startup.
reboot and let chkdsk do it's thing. when it comes back up, you should be
able to defrag no problem

Hi all.
When I am trying to degrag my Dell Inspiron 9300 with XP 2 (with the Win
defrag tool or with " Perfect Disk" ) it tells me that it will not do it
because 'Chkdsk /f' is schdueled to run - although I did not scedualed it
to run !! I even stopped the "Task Schedualler" service, to no avail.
Now - whenever I start my computer - it takes about 3 to 5 minutes to boot,
I guess because it does perform the checkdisk task.
So good people, what should I do ?
TIA
Isaac

If your data is adequately backed up, why not queue up a
Chkdsk with a /F or /R (Fix or Repair) and see if the volume
actually has inconsistencies on it that need resolving. Because
a /F /R can remove data in the course of fixing - never try to
run Chkdsk in it's 5-phase mode without data backup(s).

Go to the hard disk manufacturer's web site and download their diagnostic software
respective to your hard disk. After the test, you will know if the hard disk is bad or
not..

Quantum/Maxtor - PowerMax

Western Digital - Data LifeGuard Tools (DLGDiag)

Hitachi/IBM - Drive Fitness Test (DFT)

Seagate - SeaTools

Fujitsu - Diagnostic Tool

Samsung - Disk manager

Are you sure Perfect disk has a feature that you can schedule an offline
deframentation, 1st it will run the chkdsk, then reboot itself, the next step
is to defragment the MTF/PAGEFILE and system files, this is a good thing, I
would reboot again to see if it accually runs the chkdsk util.

Issac,

* Click on the 'Session Manager' folder > right-click in the right pane,
select 'New' > click 'String Value', type BootExecute
* Double-click BootExecute, type autocheck autochk *
* Click OK, exit Regedit

Isaac,

I mistyped the correct key to create, select New > Multi-string value, not
String Value. Very sorry.

Hi all - again.
When I am looking at the various solutions by Microsoft, all of them refer
me to the registry
- to the key " HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session
Manager\BootExecute " and then I am instructed
to click "Modify" on the Edit menu and to than to type "autocheck autochk *
", and then press ENTER.
PROBLEM IS - I DO NOT HAVE THIS \ Boot Execute key (checked it many times
!!!)
Now what ?????
Thanks, Isaac

10X Drew,
I'll try. (I just hope that I will not see the Blue Screen of Death ....
