Chkdsk error

G

Guest

I usually run chkdsk out of the drive properties/tools tab. When I run chkdsk
on C:(Windows drive) and check both boxes it prompts me for a restart, and
that's normal. When I run chkdsk on my other drives it usually does not
prompt for a restart and runs chkdsk in Windows. My problem is that I cannot
get chkdsk to run on any of my secondary(non-windows) drives with both boxes
checked without a restart. I get this following message:

The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs
exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be
accessed only by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule this disk check
to occur the next time you restart the computer? Yes/No

When I click yes chkdsk runs at restart fine until it finishes and tries to
go back to Windows. At that point I get the bluescreen of death with the
error "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL". Again this error does not come up with chdsk
and C:(Windows/System) drive, but with my secondary(non-windows) drives.
Please help.

PS: Sorry for being long-winded.

Please post an exact copy of the Stop Error message.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This
should help by allowing time to write down the STOP code properly.
Right click on the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select
Properties, Advanced, StartUp and Recovery, System Failure
and uncheck box before Automatically Restart.

Enable automatic restart on system failure after you have captured /
copied and pasted the message in a further post here.

There will also be Error Reports in Event Viewer. Please post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

Secondary hard drives. What make and model?

Try HD Tune (freeware). Download and run it and see what it turns up.
http://www.hdtune.com/

Select the Info tabs and place the cursor on C:\ under Drive letter
and then double click the two page icon ( copy to
Clipboard ) and copy into a further message.

Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon ( copy to
Clipboard ) and copy into a further message.

Also do a full surface scan with HD Tune.
