CHKDSK and ZoneAlarm 5 : Solution

Nelson

Hi,

I've been having problems using CHKDSK on my machine on which ZoneAlarm 5 is
installed, just like many others. Scheduled CHKDSK simply won't start, or
gives me messages like "Disk check is cancelled" or "Cannot have direct
access", something like that.

Fortunately, I found a workaround instead of uninstalling ZoneAlarm.

Procedures:
1. Disable ZoneAlarm auto-startup.
2. Exit ZoneAlarm.
3. Change the following registry

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\vsdatant\Start
from 1 to 2. (You may want to backup the registry first)
4. Schedule a CHKDSK by entering the following in CMD
chkdsk c: /f or chkdsk c: /r or anything you want CHKDSK to
do.
5. Restart the computer. (CHKDSK should run properly)

Of course after that, it's better that you modify the registry back from 2
to 1.

Hope this helps,
Nelson

ZA 5.1 was released today, and supposedly the chkdsk issue has been
resolved.

Zone Labs have just released a new build 5.1.011 which is claimed to
solve the problem

I can confirm it does. I tested it yesterday after downloading and
installing. Chkdsk runs fine as does NAV.

It certainly is an improvement over the previous two versions of Zone Alarm
5. However all is not yet sweetness and light as some binary image
downloaders have found. It is worthwhile to keep an eye on the ZA boards as
users give good feed back on problems as they arise.

Richard.
