Hi,
I started running chkdsk on a large hard drive (120 Gb). I
crossed both disk checking options. Chkdsk has locked the
drive and it has been running already two days.
Is this unusual? Is it harmful to shut down computer while
chkdsk is running? How long can it take?
If chkdsk has been running for two days, the program is probably
in a never ending loop and cannot go any further.
Press CTRL-ALT-DEL (hold down all three keys at same time,
then release them). This will give you access to the Task
Manager. There you can choose to Shut Down the computer so you
can start over.
If that doesn't work, press the power button on the computer.
If it doesn't turn off right away, hold the power button in for
about ten seconds and see if that doesn't make it turn off.
If that doesn't work then you'll have to pull the plug, but do
that as a last resort.
Yes, it's unusual and incorrect for chkdsk to run that long, even
with a 120 Gbyte drive; it should be a couple of hourst at worst,
and usually a lot less than that.
Whether you have any damage or not you won't know until you
get the machine shut down and try to restart/reboot it. Chkdsk
itself doesn't cause any problems, but if something has become
corrupted then there is no way of knowing what happened. Chances
are, nothing bad happened, but there is no guarantee of that.
Good luck,
