Chipset again

Ok, I found my information it tells me my graphic
controller chip type is Intel 82845g. I wanted to
download an update from Intel and it states it is only
for the following chipsets:
Intel(R) 852GM Chipset
Intel(R) 852GME Chipset
Intel(R) 855GM Chipset
Intel(R) 855GME Chipset
Intel(R) 845G Chipset
Intel(R) 845GL Chipset
Intel(R) 845GE Chipset
Intel(R) 845GV Chipset
Intel(R) 865G Chipset
Intel(R) 915G Express Chipset Family
Intel(R) 910GL Express Chipset Family
Intel(R) 915GV Express Chipset Family
Am I supposed to use only some of the numbers to know
which chipset, or is this download not compatible to my
adapter? Thanks again.

Just to reassure a little, chipsets (and chips) often become known by
shortened names.

In the days before Pentiums and Athlons, the CPUs at the heart of PCs were
known as 286, 386 and 486. Actually, before that came the 8086 and 8088, but
the point here is that although the chips were called 286, 386 and 486,
their ACTUAL code numbers were 80286, 80386 and 80486. I.e. the prefix meant
a range of CPUs. Today, that same reasoning applies to Intel's video
chipsets. I.e 845G is the same as 82485g.

It doesn't help much when people are trying to download new drivers for
their PCs (as they should) - but please trust me, and plump for the 845G
chipset.

The link brings you to the 82845G graphic controller driver page.
You don't need to guess, there is a full name there.

The 845g chipset drivers do NOT contain graphics drivers. At least the
865PE chipset drivers don't... I installed them yesterday. They contain PCI
to USB bridge and USB Controller drivers etc. Thankfully not a graphics
driver in sight since I do NOT have Intel integrated graphics on my
motherboard! I would been VERY angry of it had tried to install Intel
graphics when I have an nVidia FX graphics card.

She specifically says she wants graphics drivers. They are in a different
section of the Intel website:
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df/support_intel.asp?iid=HPAGE+header_support_download&#

Eighth line down on the left hand side of the screen, you'll see the line
Graphics. THIS is what she needs. NOT motherboard chipset drivers.

You are quite correct. Sorry! I'm an AMD bod! I was trying to help, but I've
been a little jaded by red wine!! ;o)

Ahh...Red Wine...good for heart...but it does make us do strange things
sometimes! I, too, am an AMD convert after purchasing my AMD64 3200+
Newcastle...changed from an Intel D850GB mobo and a 2.4GHz P4. Won't ever
go back to the Intel world!!!

Let's see ...

A P4 3ghz Prescott, a P3 850 (sorry, on a notebook, can't do much about it!)
a Centrino (on the Tablet) and 2 x AMD XP 2400+s.

And a spare P4 2.66 and mobo waiting for my neighbor to bring his PC over so
I can change out his ANCIENT slot A Athlon 750!

I'd put the Slot A on EBay, but I'm not sure anyone would want it! I had to
give away a 2ghz Celeron!!

845G is the complete set of chips, in which 82845g is the graphics one
and similarly. the 82845g probably comes with any of the specific
variant sets like 845ge
