Chess Titans starts mid-game

I notice that whenever I start Chess Titans, it opens in the middle of a game
in which the machine is playing black. When I try to exit the game, it asks
whether I'd like to resign or play on. Neither option has stopped the system
from presenting the same mid-game scenario every time Chess Titans is
initiated. How can I skip this repetitive nonsense?

Sounds like it could be loading a saved game.

If you go to Start -> Your user name -> Saved Games you'll find Chess Titans
listed under there, or you can right-click on Chess Titans in the Games
Explorer which will have a link to the Saved Games folder.

If you delete the file from there it should start up a new game.
