I sent a problem query to this NG an hour or so ago and it has
yet to appear. I'm checking this was to see if I missent the query or
I have a problem moreso than I thought. Please forgive this old man
for testing this NG.

You actually posted your Q twice, the last time being a response to your own
post.
With only your C hd connected boot from winxp cd, delete partitions, create
new and install.

correct installation procedure.
Install mobo chipset and other hw drivers, NOT from winupdate.
Then run winupdate to install crtical updates.
Once sys running ok connect the backup drive as slave and retest.
Now you mention another hd, its not entirely clear whether you intend this
to replace your origonal 'backup drive' or what?

Perhaps check the jumper settings on your primary hard drive.
