Checking out files from Sharepoint site by double-clicking

Hi,

I have a question regarding integration with Sharepoint sites.

Imagine that outlook is connected to a Sharepoint site (library) with .docx
files.
If I open the file by double-clicking on it in outlook, the file is opened
in Word and I am able to edit the file offline (by clicking 'Edit offline'
button), but the file is not checked out in Sharepoint.
However, if I copy file shortcut and then open the file directly in Word, I
am able to check the file out.

Question is: why can't I check the file out when double-clicking on it in
outlook?

Thanx.

Because the word copy is not an offline copy - its live - and saving it will
update to the SPS site. The copy opened from outlook is just a copy and
needs uploaded to update the original in SharePoint.

Thanks Diane,

Then one more question.
Can I somehow open a "live" file by double-clicking on it in outlook (not
using macros or other sophisticated techniques)?
I prefer using outlook to edit files in SPS, but I always need to check out
files (because all other 100 people do the same thing and it is very possible
that we work on the same file), and it is a bit annoying to copy-paste link
into Word all the time.

Thank you.

No. The current version of Outlook/Sharepoint integration is read-only.
You'll need to open it from the sps site to link the files for check out and
updates.
