checkdisk on boot

I started getting some screwy behavior in IE so I ran Chkdsk from the
command prompt. I went away and when it came back it said it found some
errors in the file system and to run chkdsk with the '/F' switch to fix
them. I tried that and it said it couldn't run it with Windows and asked me
to schedule it the next time Windows reboots. I said yes and rebooted and
checkdisk did not run. I have seen it run before on bootup when my computer
crashes. Does anyone have any ideas?

Try typing in cmd:CHKDSK C: /F

The exact error message I get when I do this, which I mentioned at in my
original post, is

"The type of file systemi is NTFS.
Cannon lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because volume is in use by another process. Would you
like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system
restarts? (Y/N)"

I did get it to run on restart when I tried it a second time. Am I not
supposed to get that error message at all? With the way Windows works, if
one thing is behaving suspiciously it means something else could be screwed
up.

I hope you get an answer, because I'm getting this message as well
(regardless whether I run checkdisk through Local Disk Tools or through Run>
chkdsk). Can't work around it, and can't defrag either. Came here hoping for
some solutions.
