Defrag and chkdsk problem together

G

Guest

I have been trying to help my friend with his computer. I did check disk on
it and it went fine. I went to do defrag and it says that "disk defragmenter
has detected that chkdsk is scheduled to run on Volume; (C:) please run
chkdsk /f."
Have checked Scheduled Tasks and checkdisk is not listed on schedule.
How can I get defrag to run and get checkdisk to let defrag to run?

Navigate to this key in your registry.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session
Manager.
change the BootExecute to read autocheck autochk*.

That should fix it.

Reboot the computer. Allow chkdsk to run. Reboot again. Run the
defragmenting program.

I have been testing HD Tune.
(freeware). Download and run it and see what it turns up.
http://www.hdtune.com/

Select the Info tabs and place the cursor on C:\ under Drive letter
and then double click the two page icon ( copy to
Clipboard ) and copy into a further message.

Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon ( copy to
Clipboard ) and copy into a further message.

Enjoy.

With regard to chkdsk and Disk Defragmenter it can help if you remove
Temporary Internet Files before you run the utility.

HD Tune.(freeware).

Run Error Scan.

Thank you for quick reply Gerry, i done all scan by using hdtune as you show
me, and also deleted all temp internet files, after 1 hour scan my hard disc
(120 Gb), the result come out is ok, nothing wrong with hd. One thing that i
see funny is: when you go and run chkdsk/f & /r, the computer said they can
not run due to some thing in the computer are using.......then they ask Do
you want to run chkdsk when i restart the computer? but don't matter you say
yes or no, chkdsk still do the check. 3 stages on chkdsk. stage 1 is varify
files is ok 100%, stage 2 varify indexes, o% and say that there are
unspecified error occur, and in 5 second later they start boosting my
computer.

You cannot run chkdsk on the drive / partition in which the Windows
operating system resides after the system has completed the boot
process. There when you ask chkdsk to check the drive / partition the
system schedules the check to be carried during the next boot.

How many drives? How many partitions?

I am not familiar with stages 1, 2, and 3. I will make enquiries.

One way to get check disc to run is to use Scheduled tasks which in itself
will not run properly unless the account/user has a password protected
account. Get a copy of Windows XP Time Saving Techniques for Dummies, 2 nd
Edition. See Technique 56 to set up user/password account. See Technique 57
on how to set it up to run automatically. Check Disc will only run before
Windows completes booting. Make sure you keep track of your password for
this account/user. It takes some work to get it set up, but it does work.
