checkbox overlapping cell border

My checkboxes are overlapping my cell borders when I use the Top vertical
alignment property of the cells. This results in the cell borders being
overlapped by the checkboxes rendering them invisible.

Changing the vertical alignment to center relieves this however, I lose a
lot of cell space.

Is there any way to resolve this?

A moderate "spacing before" (paragraph property for the paragraph
containing the checkbox)?
