Hello Douglas,

Check the proxy settings.

Internet Explorer, Tools menu Connection, lan or dialup inteface,
Turn on "automatically detect" or, if you know there is a proxy server
involved, configure it here.

Proxy settings are one source of not updating, but they turn out to be
relatively infrequent, judging by traffic here.

Windows Defender updates by two mechanisms: Automatic updates within the
program to via the AutoUpdate mechanism, or, you can manually go to
WindowsUpdate or Microsoft Update.

On a managed, corporate network, where AutoUpdate is restricted to a
corporate server, Microsoft is providing the definition updates via
WSUS--the administrator must enable the new class of updates. If the
network is running SUS or a third-party solution, automatic update within
the program won't work.

So--check out whether you can get to Windows Update on your machine--if you
can, signature updates should be offered by that route.

There are a few posts from folks with no obvious barrier to updating via
autoupdate who find that updating first via Windows Update allowed for
subsequent autoupdates to work.

I hope this post is helpful.

Please go to Windows Update, do an Express scan, and apply all offered
updates.

That may resolve this error, if you are a home user and are not having other
problems with AutoUpdate.

I receive the same error when trying to do updates. We don't use proxy
settings at work so that explaination is unfounded!

....or you may try going to my question posted today, as well: "Updating
Defender & Unable to remove..."
cws66 replied, and offered a suggestion that instantly worked. Hope it does
for you, as well.
Good luck,
Linda

what good is it if I have to run Windows Updates every time? What a stupid
program this has turned out to be. Microsoft never gets it quite right do
they!

What good is the program if I have to update it using "WINDOWS UPDATES"? Why
can't Microsoft do something correctly the first time?

It isn't clear from your responses whether you have, in fact, gone to
Windows Update and applied all critical patches.

You don't have to do that for each update--I never said that.

Updates within the program come in via autoupdate--if autoupdate is working
on your system the program should update automatically.

However, my experience is that on some systems, a required
prerequisite--perhaps "Genuine" authentication tool--may need to be applied
via Windows Update before automatic updates work. That's the reason for
that recommendation.

I don't appreciate the insinuations but I wasn't very nice either. Every
piece of software on all 6 of my home PCs is legal so your theory is not
correct. Good try to discredit the user instead of admitting the software is
crap!

I'm really sorry you took my message that way--that was absolutely not
something I even gave a second thought to--I'm dead neutral about such
issues--folks come here looking for help, and they don't need to be beaten
on --just helped.

Again--that was not what I had in mind at all--I just wanted to be clear
that you'd installed the critical updates.
In fact, I went to Microsoft Update on several machines today, and found
that the WGA update had not been installed on them. All of them were up to
date with Defender signatures, so the WGA update is not the sticking
point--or at least it was not on those machines.
