Check Disk problem

I have been trying to run check disc on c drive by scheduling it when system
reboots, however a message comes up saying that it is unable to gain
exclusive access to the volume. Any suggestions on why it won't work.

Thanks Milt,
I have done all that, but even when check disc runs automatically after the
reboot it still says 'unable to gain exclusive access, your system will now
reboot'
so it reboots without running check disc.

Thanks Wesley,
Tried that but could not locate anything that might be causing the problem

Bagman,
Were you able to run chkdsk in the past? And if so, have you added any
drivers, devices, updates or applications to your computer since then?

Milt,
That's a positive, I usually run check disk and defrag. every 2-3 weeks and
yes I have added more software since the last run of check disc. (I'm a bit
of a chronic downloader)I have tried closing various services that I thought
maybe interfering ie. antivirus, diskeeper, desktop armor etc.etc. but to no
avail. I might have to get drastic and start uninstalling a few programs to
find out what is using the volume to prevent check disc from running

Sorry, but I can't add anything, except you might want to try System
Restore to go back in time. You can go back, and if it doesn't help, move up
to where you are again.

Good luck,
Milt

you all are very very close indeed, you will need
to add more to the chkdsk. type in this prompt called

chkdsk /f when it finish scanning, answer the
question with 'y' for yes & then reboot your computer &
then when the computer reboots it will check the disk
& reboot the computer. for future use you can open
your command prompt to check other files & other things.

you can type 'help' for this I know plenty of dos commands.

I too am having problems with chkdsk working. I try to run diskkeeper
defrag, and it tells me that chkdsk needs to be performed on startup.
Well, I reboot, and it will not start chkdsk at all. I've been to
Tools, etc. to get it turned on, but it still won't perform the task.
Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cannot lock volume for direct access
Cannot open volume for direct access

Unable to run CHKDSK
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555484

A program called Hitman Pro can cause the problem.

A really old version of ZoneAlarm (a version from 2004) can cause the
problem.

Spyware Doctor can also cause the problem.

The /x switch doesn't work if Spyware Doctor is installed. Spyware Doctor
needs to be uninstalled or do this...

Quoted from PCTools, Spyware Doctor...
1. Exit from Spyware Doctor (to exit from Spyware
Doctor please right click on the Spyware Doctor icon in
the notification area (next to the clock on the Windows
taskbar) and select Exit from the menu that appears)

2. Delete the file
ikhlayer.sys from %windir%\system32\drivers\
or
from c:\windows\system32\drivers\

3. Restart Spyware Doctor

Chkdsk, defrag and error-checking should now work.

[[There is currently no fix for this problem.]]
[[NOTE: You may have success if you schedule Chkdsk to run at startup and
use the /X switch, which will force a dismount. ]]
from...
JSI Tip 7079. You receive 'Cannot open volume for direct access' when Chkdsk
runs during Windows XP startup
http://www.jsifaq.com/subO/tip7000/rh7079.htm

To run chkdsk from a command prompt.

Start | Run | Type: cmd | Click OK |
In the command prompt, type:

chkdsk C: /x

Hit your Enter key.

The following error message appears:
Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you
like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system
restarts? (Y/N)

Type Y, hit Enter and close the command prompt.

Reboot.

The /x switch: Use with NTFS only. Forces the volume to dismount first, if
necessary. All open handles to the drive are invalidated. /x also includes
the functionality of /f. The /F switch fixes errors on the disk.
