Check Disk Killed my Computer!!!

Okay, I'd upgraded to RC1 build 5600 (NO ONE TOLD ME THERE WAS 5728!!!) and
had booted up my computer properly for the first time. During boot it wanted
to do Chkdisk, i skipped it and booted up my computer. It was running fine
for a few minutes and then told me that the 'Windows Event Log Service' had
terminated unexpectedly and had to restart my computer. It restarted and
wanted me to do Chkdisk again, which I skipped again.

This happened a few times, each time restarting and each time skipping
Chkdisk, so after a while I decided to let it check my drive. I didn't pay
too much attention to what it was putting on the screen, it finished,
rebooted and now the MBR is messed up.

I've been doing tonnes of goooooogling and found that most people either use
the XP CD (which obviously I can't) or the boot disk of some version of
windows (I can't get a floppy drive to work in my computer).

I really could do with my computer back ASAP so could someone PLEASE HELP
ME!!!

Have you tried booting from the Vista dvd to get to the recovery tools?

First off, nobody's responsible for telling you that a new version has come
out. Second, there's been tons of postings in this group since Sept 22 that
talk about build 5728.

With regards to the urgency in getting your computer back, you do realize
that this is all beta/pre-release stuff, and shouldn't be used on
production/critical systems. If things are too badly hosed, be prepared for
a re-format followed by a re-install.

I just see the install button
When you get to install, click NEXT. You should be given system restore
options. I think its there where you will find and option to repair the
boot.

To use Vista's recovery console use the following instructions:

a.. 1.) Insert your Vista DVD and boot from it. You will see the loading
files screen, then the first installation screen will appear.

a.. 2.) Click next on first screen, then click the link that says recovery
options.

a.. 3.) You will then see a System Recovery options dialog - select your
keyboard layout and click next.

a.. 4.) Windows will search for any valid installations, once this is
completed, click next.

a.. 5.) You are then presented with the following options: Startup Repair,
System Restore, CompletPC Restore, Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool, and
Command Prompt.

Okay, but what can I do from there? the Startup Repair finds no problems.

Tried a system restore?

Tried. One was created the day I upgraded, it was when Windows Update was
installed. It came up with an error, not enough disk space, which is odd, I
thought I had 20GB left.

You could try the fixmbr command at C prompt but I don't know enough about
it to recommend it. Its worth researching it up on Google to see if it can
help.
If it was me in this situation then I would just do a full reinstall from
the bootup disc. That should in turn create a new mbr. It may be using a
plough to catch a fish but its probably the easiest option.

fixmbr doesn't work, neither does help

Type fdisk /mbr

''fdisk' is not a recoginized internal or external command...' etc.

I tried that on X:\ and C:\ (X:\ is the drive the setup uses for recovery)

What exactly makes you think your MBR is messed up?
Well I did some googling, the proble exactly is that my computer gets to
'Verifying DMI pool data...' and it stops there. I checked lots of sites and
anyway the same thing happened before (I think) but I can't remember how I
fixed it.

J

Doesn't sound like the MBR to me.
SYMPTOMS
When the computer is running the power-on self test (POST), it may stop
responding (hang), and a "Verifying DMI pool data" error message may be
displayed.

CAUSE
This issue is caused by the hardware.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, please contact your computer manufacturer.

Vista should only be installed on a test system. It should not be installed
on a production machine or a primary home computer.

There was something wrong with the file system on the drive to begin with
because Vista normally does not ask to run chkdsk. That should have been a
clue to start with.

Get a drive diagnostic utility and a zero fill utility from the drive
manufacturer's web site. Run their diagnostics on the drive. If it checks
out clean use the zero fill utility to zero out the drive, then do a clean
install.

1. When Chkdsk wants to scan the disk for errors, LET IT!
2. It only runs when there may be a problem with the hard drive!
3. DO NOT INSTALL BETA PRODUCTS UNLESS YOU KNOW HOW TO
DO BETA TESTING!!!
4. No one should have to tell you what "builds" are available! (Are you a
Gates relative?)
5. Just exactly why can't you use an "XP CD" to boot?? (Pirated Windows
maybe??)
6. "tonnes of goooooogling", And you couldn't find out how to fix the
MBR"????

FIND THE BOXES YOUR COMPUTER AND HARDWARE CAME IN AND RETURN ALL THE PARTS
TO THE BOXES, PLACE THE BOXES IN A DARK CLOSET OR PREFERABLY A DAMP
BASEMENT....................
YOU DON'T NEED A COMPUTER ANYWAY..
