Check Disk in Win XP

I can't get ChkDsk to run anymore, instead I get a message saying - 'Can not open volume for direct access'. The systems then goes on to load as per normal.
 
I had a problem like that and ended up booting from the CD and running
chkdsk from the console. I still have to run chkdsk like that if I want to
run it manually.
