I need a cheapo laser printer that works with win95 and possibly usb. Does such a beast exist? I can get a cannon for less than $200
but it only does win98.

Thanks

Win95 doesn't do USB, even in OSR2.5, which allegedly
had USB didn't work well. The Minolta PP1250W
might be possible. It has a Parallel input.

While Brother has 3 less than $200 ones, the HL-1435, HL-1440
and the HL-5140.

It currently has USB working on win95 but you could be right, I'm not sure how well it works. Going by how well everything else
works on the machine I'd say it will be a dog, so it might be a good idea to go parrallel :) I've just had a look and it does USB,
Parrallel and win95 and it's cheap, just the combination I'm looking for. Thanks.

I cannot guarantee Win95's USB support would work with it, nor do
I know what quality it is, but one with a driver that clearly
includes driver for "win9598" is a Samsung ML1740
http://www.samsungusa.com/cgi-bin/n...er/Printers&_categorySearch:_ListLevel4=70894

A few places sell it for ~ $150 but currently there's a $50
rebate,

Are you certain that the Canon only does Win98? Sometimes they
only mention support for OS they tested, but driver might also be
Win95 compatible.

Another alternative might be picking up a used printer, something
older will more likely have Win95 support if you can find drivers
(or for basic text the Win95 bundled drivers may suffice so long
as it's a hardware printer, not a winprinter, though no true
hardware printers are USB, at least not those old enough to be
"cheap" today.)

The windows98 and windows95 printer drivers should use the same
architecture. Unless someone's gone out of their way to exclude
windows95 users in the code, it should be the same driver for both.

Go to the Canon (I'm presuming that's a typo rather than some other
brand) site and look up your printer in the downloads section. Every
one I've looked up included drivers for win9x -- that covers windows95
(all variants), windows98 (all variants), and windowsME.

There are also lower end black and white only models from Samsung and
HP (below $200 Cdn). I can't list model numbers, as I haven't really
looked into it recently.

The big thing to consider with buying a printer isn't the purchase
price, as that's pretty much a small expense in the long run. Look
into the pricing and availability of the consumables. The Canon and
Samsung printers seem to require a bit of hunting for toner
cartridges. The HP models, meanwhile, have new and refilled
cartridges available from just about any office supply store.
