characters overlaid

Occasionally, when I'm typing/updating a document in Word, instead of
'inserting' a character, it deletes (NOT overlays) the next character! Is
there a way to stop it from doing so? I have no idea what I've
keyed/entered/accidently done to cause it to do so. I've tried searching for
similar FAQ's to no avail, nor have I been able to find a key combination to
make it stop doing so. Holding down the "Fn" & associated keys has no effect.
