Inserting a character in a message

I'm not sure how to explain it. Once in a while, I'll accidently strike the
wrong key on the key board which result when I am typing and want to insert a
ltr character or number, the ltr character ahead is deleted.

Here is what I mean. Say i am typing something like Now is the time for
all men to came to our country. The word came supposed to read come. So
when I attempted to change the a to the letter o, the letter m is deleted.
If I add more ltr to that word, the letter e will be deleted and so on.

I want to know what key on the keyboard that would do that?

Press the INS key once. You are in overtype mode.
