My laptop and desk macbine can at last communicate with each other but the
laptop (the client) cannot reach the internet.

All was fine until the system downloaded updates from Microsoft and
installed them -- and then - well, all hell broke loose!

Unstable is not the word to describe either the machines or my mental state
at the moment.

Would some kind soul put an end to these appalling tantrums by the system
and give me some peace so that i can actually use these machines with some
confidence.

With forthcoming gratitude,

George Harrison

. . . and while i composed that message - the demon in the machine has now
robbed me of communicating from this, the desk machine, with my laptop.

I tell you - there are forses at work here and I am slowly being robbed of
my self- esteem!

George

I would gladly assist you but this would need back and fourth
messages.. so if you want send me an instant messaging

We don't know what updates were installed or what problems the
computers are having, so it's hard to give a specific solution.

Run System Restore to go back to a time before the problems occurred.

Dear Steve

I DID run restore and it refused to do so. It simply said that my machine
could not be restored to that point!

George

Kenny fixed it at a stroke - and I am so grateful to him!

George

Please tell us what the solution was.

Yes that why I offered to help the man. And I believe I made a new friend
in the process. :-)

His setup was that he was getting the internet via a modem connected with
Ethernet to his desktop machine.
On the desktop machine he also had a wireless network adaptor, that was
communicating to the laptop.

The 2 machines could transfer files etc, but the desktop could not send the
internet to the laptop via the wireless connection,
because the ICS setting for some reason had been unchecked.

By restoring the setting on the LAN connection to share it over the wireless
network (ICS) the laptop regained its access to the internet.

I was simple, but someone had to understand his setup in order to help
him... it took me more time to understand his setup
than to find the solution.

Most people now use a "modem wireless router" that does everything.... but
ICS is valid, and I use it all the time myself.

Dear Steve

I see that in another response John Jay has answered your question.

As he so rightly pointed out, the greater mass of the solution lay in
knowing what my computing arrangements are. After that, he fixed it in a
trice! And with very clever tricks i had never even dreamed of - such as
sending him a snapshot of my screen.

May I make an observation here that is strictly not techincal: there is a
good community spirit here and i am grateful for the help so freely given to
me. As JJS said - or let me echo what he said - I actually made a new
friend in the process!

Now this is civilisation!

Every good wish and with my gratitude.

Thanks for posting the details, John.
