Changing Windows Explorer toolbar icons

I

ikirov

Hello everyone. I want to change the icons on the toolbar of my
Windows Explorer (I mean the 'up,' 'folders,' 'view,' etc. icons).
After doing a search of my entire machine using an icon extraction
program, I found that these icons are located in a file called
mainrENU.dll. Now I searched for that file, and I found a shortcut in
my local folders to mainrENU.dll in the system32 folder, but it was not
there (I have hidden folders displayed, used all unlocks). I also
cannot open this file using any program, nor can I see it in explorer.
Does anyone have any idea what to do or if I'm getting the explorer
toolbar icon location wrong? Please help if you do.

Thanks,
-Ivan

Hello Ivan -

Having never heard of the mainrENU.dll file, I searched my drives and found
it 5 times, all located in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\Roxio
Central\ folders. Only two of them are the same size.

Unfortunately, that's all the information I have on this subject, except to
say that you may want to look into a freeware program called Resource
Hacker. It may do what you want with your icons. I haven't tried it myself
yet, but it's very highly rated and popular among hackers.

Sorry I couldn't be more help. Good luck.

Thank you, Ayush, for the info on Y'z Toolbar and Y'z Shadow. I'm always
interested in having things "my" way.

Hi Ivan,

The icons you refer to (and many more) are stored within
windows/system32/shell32.dll

You will need a resource hacker to change them and be prepared to repeat the
process every time windows update changes the file.

Hope that helps

Andy

I realized later that these programs need to be running to make their
changes - which is too bad for somebody looking for "permanent" changes.
....still cute little programs tho'. Thanks again.
