Changing user names?

T

I bought my PC (XPv2) from Office Depot.
For some reason, it thinks my name is "Office Depot", and there are
several "Office Depot" folders, under applications, and elsewhere.
Obviously, they used this as a floor model (without telling me...)

Anyhow, how do I change it, get rid of everything "Office Depot" on
this machine, and change it to my name?

Thanks.

Go into Control Panel > User Accounts
Create a new account, giving it Administrator privileges.

Log off and into the new account. Copy across any files etc you want to
keep, from the other account, until you have it set up the way you want it.

Then delete the "Office Depot" account (again via Control Panel > User
Accounts), choosing not to keep its files

If this is indeed a floor model, I hope you got this system at
a substantial discount. Most retailers sell their floor models
at a lower price than they would charge for one in an unopened
box. Think about it. If it's a system they had on display then
you bought a "used" computer. If it was me, I'd want 25% off
minimum or I'd take it back and insist on an unopened box. If
you get the "it's the last one in stock" spiel, return it and
look elsewhere. You have no way of knowing how that machine was
treated while it was on display.

That said, instead of just renaming accounts, you might want to
consider reinstalling Windows and all your applications. That
way you can be sure that there's nothing lurking on the hard
drive that could cause problems in the future.

If you prefer not to reinstall Windows, and you want to retain
the files and settings from the "Office Depot" account then
you're going to have to do the following:
1. Create a new account with your name. Log on and log off of
this new account.
2. Log on to the system with another account that is a member
of the administrators group. That can be either the built-in
Adminstrator account or a temporary account you create just for
this procedure. Since you have to boot into Safe Mode in
Windows XP Home Edition to log on with the Adminstrator
account, it's usually easier to create a temp admin account.
3. Copy the User Profile of "Office Depot" into your new
account.
4. Log on with your new account. If you're satisfied that it's
setup correctly, you can delete the "Office Depot" account. You
can also delete the temp admin account if you created one.

To fix the "Registered to" information for WinNT/2K/XP, you can use
Start > Run > Regedit.exe to edit:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\RegisteredOwner

and:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current
Version\RegisteredOrganization

How this will affect the name displayed in previously installed
applications will vary depending upon each individual program; some
read the registered owner information dynamically, while others read
it only during installation.

The user profile folders (C:\Documents and Settings\Username)
_cannot_ be renamed, even if the associated user account has been.
So, your best course of action would be to log on using the built-in
Administrator account, create a new user account, with the username
desired. You can then delete the old user account(s).

Back up your register then open it and choose Search. Search for Office
Depot. Everytime you find it, change it to your name.
