Changing user IDs, computers, etc., with Outlook and OE -- what a mess!

I have had a lot of issues lately involving changing user IDs, bringing
users from workgroup to domain logins, switching computers, and running
multiple identities. I really need a pointer to a good reference on how to
handle these situations.

These involve both Outlook and Outlook Express -- yes, I know they are
radically different code bases, but the issues affect both nearly equally,
especially when used in a POP/SMTP environment as most small businesses do.
Users frankly don't care about the details. They just want to keep their
email. Speaking of which, backups...

Switching a user on Win2k or XP from workgroup to domain login means giving
them a new UID, a new profile. Same for switching to a new computer.
Exporting/importing can be a royal pain, depending on what versions are
involved. Try doing that with account configurations. OE6 keeps saying
there's nothing to import, doesn't say what its looking for, or where.
Where's it documented!? Certainly not in the online help.

Multiple user identities with OE on Win9x are a wonder to behold. Add a
new login ID, launch OE, and it duplicates all the identity files for all
current identities to the new user. Looks like it actually tries to
synchronize multiple copy files of a given user's mailboxes under all
different logins. Wierd. I suspect that Outlook in some incarnations may
actually hide email based on identity.

ISP account settings can be exported from some, exported to some, depending
on what you're running where. Sometimes there's an obscure way to do
something, sometimes there's just something that looks like it should work
but just produces inscrutable error messages.

It wouldn't be so bad of there were only a couple of versions of Outlook to
worry about, but there are at least half a dozen with significant
differences in common use.

Is there anyone, anywhere, who has sorted this whole mess out? Slipstick
has made a start on it, but their focus seems to be limited.

for OE issues try www.tomsterdam.com/insideOE/index.htm - I think some of
the identity stuff is covered there. I know how to move mail to new accounts
without importing is there - look for information on reconnecting mail after
backing it up.

Thanks, Diane. Yes, been there, done that. It's not a bad site, but
again, limited.

Has Microsoft really been ignoring the whole migration issue, the way it
looks to me? Their KB search engine just keeps getting worse and worse;
can't do a boolean to save its life. Every time I try an "and" search
(boolean or otherwise) I get bupkus. They should use the Google engine.
