What you mean by you "lost the look that displayed the Control Panel"?

1. Right-click on Desktop and choose Properties
2. From the Theme tab choose Windows XP and press OK.
3. Right-click on Taskbar and choose Properties.
4. Click Start Menu tab and then click "Start Menu" for your menu style and
click Ok.

Hope this is what you were asking for.

Silly Wild A** Guess.

Right click the Start button, click Properties, on the Start Menu tab click
the customize button.

Under the Advanced Start Menu options, check the box next to Expand Control
Panel.

OK you way back out.

Expand Control Panel...
Specifies whether to display the contents of Control Panel in a menu instead
of a window.

If Control Panel is missing completely from the Start Menu, you may need to
change back to the XP Start Menu and click on that Customize button.

Then click the Advanced tab, under Start menu items, make sure that: Don't
display this item is NOT selected.

Click OK on Customize Start Menu.

Select the Classic Start Menu, click Apply and then OK on Start Menu and
Taskbar Properties.
