changing text highlight colour

When I highlight text in a presentation, the contrasting colour chosen by
powerpoint hurts the eyes. Does any one know how to change the text highlight
colour to something softer.

Go to the Format menu and choose Slide Design. At the top of the Task Pane,
you will want to click on Color Schemes, and then at the bottom click on
Edit Color Schemes. I often find that the last one in the list (Accent and
Followed Hyperlink) has poor contrast, but depending on what isn't looking
good, you might need to change any of the last three.

Try this
Select text/Right click/Custom animation/Emphasis. There is an effect with
which you can choose the color

If you mean the contrast color that appears when you select text while
editing slides, then no, that's based on some internal algorithm that takes
the background and text colors into consideration.

Luckily, we don't have this issue in PPT 2007, which is currently in beta.
(I think it's sometimes a little difficult to see what you've actually
selected, but at least we don't have the ugly/painful automatic contrasting
color.)
