changing routers

Have a wired D-Link DI-704UP with 2 XP Home Edition PC's. I am adding a
third XP PC in another room and am switching to a wireless D-Link DI-624
router. Is there anything that I need to remove, undo, delete etc. before I
convert to the wireless router? I am sharing a cable modem. Thanks, Steve T.

Steve,

If it's cable broadband that you're sharing, note this advice about getting the
modem to recognise the new router.

The details about connecting to your service, including account and password (if
used) on the existing router may be useful. Any tweaks to the router may also
be useful.

I, personally, when switching routers, like to go thru the entire router
website, and print off the contents. Here's another possibility, which I use
for backing up my blogs. HTTrack (free and easy to install) will let you make a
mirror copy of any website, including the router management web pages, on your
computer. Having this for reference, if your current router is going to be
decommissioned (or sold) could save you inconvenience.

And remember when setting up the new router, to set it up properly.

And set up WiFi securely.

What always works for me is: Power down all devices including the
cable modem, router and PCs. Connect all cables to configure your
network. (Ethernet cable from cable modem to router WAN port, ethernet
cable to any PC you want hard wired, etc.) Then power up the cable
modem and wait about 45 seconds while the cable modem establishes
connection to the ISP. Then power up the router and wait about 45
seconds while the router and cable modem establish a connection. Then
power up your PC(s) one at a time.

Good luck, jimbo
