Changing phone number format in Outlook XP

When entering a phone number for a contact the default
format is "+9 (999) 999-9999". I want the format to
be "999.999.9999". Although I can enter the number in that
format the "check phone number" dialog does not recognize
it because it has "Country/Region", "City/Area Code",
and "Local Number". How do I change this?

The masking of phone numbers in Outlook is hard coded--not subject to user
configuration.

Thanks for the response. That's a shame. I'm pretty sure
there is no international standard format... Is there one
that most people use?

International format is what Outlook will use when you enable the country
code to be added automatically to local phone numbers in Dialing options.

I also want to add phone numbers *without* them being autoformatted to
include all the prefix mumbo jumbo and hyphens.

I've been using outlook for a while now and I migrated from outlook
xpress, all my phone numbers were added when i was using outlook xpress
and they don't contain any formatting.

only recently i discoverd that if i edit them they get bloody
formatted! :(

I've noticed people in here complainin that the phone numbers ARE NOT
getting formatted after they convert from 2k to 2k2. Is there a way to
induce that problem, I think it would be a very nice problem to have.
