Changing Outlook's default "Save As" directory

Is there any way to change the default "Save As" directory
under Outlook 2000 through the registry?

What is happening is that users are opening attachments,
editing them and then saving them using "File\Save As" . The problem
here is that the default "Save As" directory is supposedly some
randonly generated folder that starts with "OLK" and has a couple of
numbers added to it. (OLK52). The problem with this is that alot of
the times they cannot locate the attachment to work with again, plus
the fact is that we have DeepFreeze installed on these PC's and these
attachments will be wiped out when they restart the PC. Telling them
to ensure that they change the "Save As" folder to their home
directory on the server does not work either.

I read one paper that said to change the "Personal" folder
under "Users Shell Folders" in the registry to the correct one, but
this does not work. I also downloaded the small utility "OLDefPath"
which does not work either.

Any ideas?

This is a training issue. Show them how to save attachments *first* and then
open them in the application they wish. Temp means temp.

See http://www.slipstick.com/config/attachfolder.htm - I've used OLDefPath
and it has worked.

I fooled around a little more in the registry and located the
"OutlookSecureTempFolder" and changed it to their home directory and
it worked. Then I read your response and looked at the following link
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=249793 and it states the same
thing.

Training issue..................yep!

Would it make a difference..............nope!

Thanks for the help.

The problem is, though, that no matter where you point the Outlook Secure
Temp Folder, it's still TEMP and Outlook can eventually delete those files.

Sure it will. The next time someone loses all the changes they've
assiduously been making in a document, you can remind them that they got the
memo. That's just the way it is.
