But from IT's perspective, they'd have to know enough about XL to set it
up in a way that's safe. Sure most of your options aren't likely to
screw anything up (or, almost as important, require tech support), but
they don't necessarily know that to the extent they'd need to feel
secure about letting you loose with them.

It's far easier for them to simply block everything.

Actually, the only thing IT would need to set up would be folder permissions
(or lack thereof). This way, if the user of ANY app tries to change the
location of their work files, they'll get the exact same error message
regarding no access to any folders except the ones they've been given access
to. IT needs to know absolutely nothing about which apps are in use.
